If the client cannot provide enough quality photographs of the pets to work with, Nancy schedules a photo session with the pet(s).

In the case of the painting to the left, Nancy did a photo shoot outdoors with the dogs. Here are a few that were used to work with while creating this portrait.
 
 
 

Nancy begins with a composition and posts developments on line so the client can comment and decisions can be made. This client thought she wanted all 5 of her extended family's dogs in the portrait. After looking at the choices she decided to only showcase her 3.

 
 
 
               

The Painting gets to a certain point on canvas and Nancy will sketch ideas in photoshop and post before going further. Below are examples of different colors and backgrounds
 
 
 
               

Based on discussion the canvas is altered and the question of a headdress is sketched first in photoshop and posted

One more decision to make. Clouds or no clouds. Then it is finished.
